Cothay Manor, Somerset — Period Furniture & Furnishings

Case study by Stuart Interiors

Cothay Manor is widely regarded as one of the finest small medieval manor houses in England, dating to the 14th century and set within celebrated gardens near Wellington in Somerset. The Robb family, who have carefully stewarded the Manor for many years, commissioned Stuart Interiors to provide a series of bespoke period furniture pieces and furnishings for the house's principal rooms.

The commission called for furniture and furnishings in keeping with the Manor's medieval and early modern character — pieces that would sit authentically within rooms little changed since the Tudor period. Stuart Interiors designed and made a Charles I refectory dining table for the Great Hall, alongside a medieval cruciform table for the dining room. Seating includes a Knole settee upholstered in a Pomegranate pattern and an Elizabethan armchair upholstered in a Rose and Pansy weave, together with an upholstered Tudor throne.

Textile elements include Tree of Life curtaining hung at the Manor's principal windows, woven to complement the existing historic character of the interiors. All pieces were researched, designed and made by Stuart Interiors to be consistent with the period of the building — not reproduction in the generic sense, but furniture informed by careful study of surviving originals and period records.
