Fettes College, Edinburgh — Grade A Listed Roofing Works

Case study by Finlayson Roofing

Fettes College is one of Edinburgh's best-known Grade A listed buildings, an imposing Victorian Gothic campus that has presented conservation roofing contractors with awkward, highly visible repair challenges for well over a century. Finlayson Roofing has carried out roofing work at the College over a number of years, working alongside the Edinburgh architectural practice Scott & Brown.

As with much of the College's roofscape, the work required careful attention to existing slate and leadwork detailing, with repairs and replacement sections matched to the surrounding historic fabric rather than treated as a standard re-roof. Access, sequencing and minimising disruption to a working school site added further constraints typical of occupied heritage buildings.

The relationship with Scott & Brown has continued across several Grade A listed properties, including Winton Castle, reflecting a track record the practice has been willing to put its name to.
