McAteer Restoration & Conservation Plastering

Fourth-generation family firm of stuccodores established in 1901, working in traditional lime plasterwork, decorative cornicing, and in-situ ornamental plasterwork across churches, historic houses, and public buildings throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland.

McAteer Plastering is a fourth-generation family firm of stuccodores based in Randalstown, County Antrim, established in the year 1900 by William John McAteer and his brother James McAteer — master plasterers and renowned stuccodores whose work is still on display in churches, chapels, bank buildings, government buildings, and stately homes across Ireland.

The firm has been passed down through the generations with the skills of traditional solid and decorative plasterwork transmitted directly from father to son. Jim McAteer, the current owner, joined in 1980 after working under the close supervision of his father James — himself with over sixty years of experience in traditional plastering. Jim's son Daniel has recently joined the business, continuing the family tradition into its fifth generation. Jim himself brings over thirty-five years of hands-on experience in solid and decorative plastering.

McAteer's expertise covers the full range of traditional plastering techniques: plaster lath ceiling repairs, cornice and moulding repair and stabilisation, interior and exterior in-situ cornicing, mouldings and ornate plasterwork both new and to match existing, fibrous plasterwork including castings, sculptural enrichments, and free-hand decorative modelling, all external and internal lime and stucco render finishes, and limecrete flooring. Consultancy on the restoration and conservation of historic plasterwork is also offered. Traditional materials — natural hydraulic lime, lime putty and premixed mortars, riven oak and chestnut laths, goat and horse hair — are stocked and used throughout.
