Plaisterers' Hall — Entrance Hall Enrichment Project
Plaisterers' Hall, on London Wall, is the livery hall of the Worshipful Company of Plasterers — making the choice of specialist appropriately fitting. Following a generous endowment from the late Assistant John Robinson, Locker & Riley were selected to design and create bespoke decorative plasterwork for the Hall's Entrance Hall, with the aim of bringing the space into keeping with the ornate character of the rest of the building.
The project began with a comprehensive survey and documentation of the existing room, followed by sketch design and concept development for two distinct areas: a flat ceiling with a detailed cornice and central feature, and a dome ceiling incorporating spandrel panels and intersecting enriched arches across two levels, the dome itself divided into eight enriched sections. A custom metal framing grid was engineered to support the intricate plaster elements, with all enrichment details bespoke-modelled for the space, and existing architectural elements retained and reused where possible to preserve historical continuity.
The installation took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring the team to adapt working practices to strict safety protocols while maintaining the standard of craftsmanship the Hall's livery company would expect. The completed scheme demonstrates Locker & Riley's bespoke modelling and design capability at its most ambitious, executed for one of the City of London's most discerning clients.
