Wolverhampton Art Gallery — Conservation of a Victorian Civic Landmark

Case study by Croft Building and Conservation Ltd

Wolverhampton Art Gallery is one of the West Midlands' most significant Victorian civic buildings, a Grade II listed structure occupying a prominent position in the city centre. The building houses a notable collection of art including one of the UK's largest collections of Pop Art, and its architectural fabric demands careful conservation to maintain its heritage character alongside continued public use.

Croft Building and Conservation carried out conservation and restoration works to the building's historic fabric, applying their expertise in traditional masonry repair and lime mortar pointing to preserve and stabilise the Victorian stonework. The project required careful attention to the building's detailing and the selection of appropriate materials to ensure all repairs were sympathetic to the original construction.

The commission reflects Croft's broad experience across different types of listed and historic buildings — from medieval ecclesiastical structures to Victorian institutional architecture — and their ability to deliver high-quality conservation work in occupied, high-profile public buildings.
