Hanbury Hall, Worcestershire — Grade I Listed Timber Frame Extension

Case study by Croft Building and Conservation Ltd

Hanbury Hall is a Grade I listed baroque country house in Worcestershire, built around 1701 and now in the care of the National Trust. It is one of the West Midlands' most celebrated heritage properties, renowned for its early eighteenth-century interiors and parkland setting.

Croft Building and Conservation were commissioned to design and construct a new timber frame extension to the hall, a project requiring complex detailing and precise execution to balance the demands of modern use with the imperative of historic preservation. Working within a Grade I listed setting demands the highest standards of material choice, joinery skill, and sensitivity to the existing fabric — qualities that defined every stage of this commission.

The completed extension was recognised with a RIBA West Midlands Award in 2025, with judges specifically commending the design's sensitivity to its historic context and the high quality of craftsmanship evident in the construction and materials used throughout. The award confirms Croft's standing as one of the region's foremost conservation contractors.
